Microsoft has officially release Vista SP1 today. You can force a download of SP1 by executing Windows Update or wait until Microsoft pushes the update to your machine. There are no new features in SP1, this is a stability release for Vista which rolls up all the bug fixes and makes some behind the scenes improvement to interoperate better with certain hardware platforms. Here the highlights from Microsoft Technet:
- Quality improvements, including all previously released updates, which address reliability, security, and performance (SP1 doesn’t include updates released in the two months prior to the SP1 release, reducing the number of last-minute changes in the critical time just prior to release.)
- Support for emerging hardware and standards, such as an Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) and flash-based devices formatted using the Extended File Allocation Table (exFAT) file format
- Improvements that help businesses better optimize their IT infrastructures
The Microsoft Vista blog (link) describes some of the issues they encountered with SP1 during testing. It seems the most common problems were due to drivers. Microsoft has published a list of driver issues here.
I am in the process of updating my Lenovo X60 tablet, but first I decided to run Lenovo's Thinkvantage System Update utility. I had not run this for a while so it is dowloading about 1/2 GB of updates. I will update this post with my progress.
I will wait a day or two before I update my XPS 720 to make sure my X60 is stable.
