I was glad to see this review. I have a trip to Germany planned in March and was looking at T-Mobile Germany's website and they offer the Kaiser over there and was contemplating purchasing it for use in the US. Generally the German phones and ROM work on our network here. Assuming T-Mobile US launches 3G/UMTS/HSDPA this year, do you know if this phone will work with its network? So far I have not seen any reliable information concerning when T-Mobile US will launch 3G etc. service, nor in what cities and which frequency. I would hate to get a phone that won't be compatible with the new high speed network, assuming it will launch this year... Thanks!

Hi Chris,

The unit currently can be setup to access UMTS 2100, 1900, 850, and 800. I know T-Mobile will use 1700 and another frequency (1900 or 850). The Kaiser should be able to handle 1700 with the appropriate Radio ROM, but T-Mobile is so stingy with information on their 3G network that no one knows but a chosen few. I am going out to CES next week and will try to corner T-Mobile on this subject. It would be interesting to know if the Vario III in DE can be setup for UMTS 1700. If so you would be set for the US.
