It will be a good day in Washington, DC, the Washington Redskins won their first game yesterday. It always amazes me, how the team winning on Sunday affects the city's psyche on Monday.
Ever since Apple dropped the price of their iPhone, I have been thinking hard of purchasing the 4GB version for $299 and trying to unlock it. George Hotz, who attends the Rochester Institute of Technology, details how to use the iPhone's JTAG mode on his blog (link). The key to the process is opening the iPhone and tricking it into thinking the flash is erased by feeding 1.8v to what he calls the A17 trace (more reading required), then replacing the code in the radio flash. Sounds pretty straight forward, however whenever you play with hardware the risk of bricking the device is always high. So I will need to read some more, however I think I need to make the decision quickly since Apple is no longer producing the 4GB version and I am sure the stock is dwindling.
Congress is finally trying to do something about empowering cell phone customers (link). It is fairly watered down but gives some basic protection in regards to contracts. I would love to see something more concrete about unlocking.
