On day 2, I still like the Wing. It is a definite improvement over the MDA both in hardware and software. How much of an improvement? If you compare the MDA and Wing in their default configurations, it is a big improvement; however for someone who has heavily tweaked their MDA the changes are more subtle. Here are items I have found so far:
- Bluetooth audio quality is definitely much better.
- Some functions like navigating through the tabs in settings is definitely faster.
- WIFI speed seems about the same.
- It feels very solid in your hand.
Microsoft and T-Mobile have a deal for developers at this link (fixed). The Wing is available for $149 - a $50 rebate = $99 for a 1 year contract on a new activation or an additional line on a Family plan. According to a thread on HOFO, the total cost with taxes runs about $287, a $12 savings from $299 price or in my case a $62 savings. The bigger attraction seems to be a 1 year contract. Since I have 14 days to return my unit, I may consider it, especially with 3G coming soon.
Here are some screen prints of the device information screens between the MDA and the Wing.
The MDA's version information.
The Wing's version information, notice the big difference in radio ROM version.
The MDA's hardware information.
The Wing's hardware information, one bad item is about 8MB less program storage space. It is clear that I will be installing most applications on the storage card.
The MDA's identity page.
The Wing's identity page.
Next up re-installing my environment, more that tomorrow...
