The Wall Street Journal reports today (link, may be accessed via news.congoo.com) that T-Mobile is planning to launch its Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) service nationwide this summer. The service allows T-Mobile cell phone customers to automatically roam onto the T-Mobile HotSpot WIFI network and their home network without incurring cell phone minute usage.
Two phones are currently compatible with the service, the Nokia 6136 and the Samsung T709T709. The estimated cost of the phones is $50 and with a 2-year contract. A WiFi access point is free after a $50 rebate but not required. Unlimited WiFi calling at home and at any T-Mobile HotSpot location costs $20 per month. Each additional user on a family plan is $5 per month.
Currently the T-Mobile router does not have the ability to plug in a land line phone although the Wall Street Journal reports that this feature maybe added later. This would be a great feature since it would allow you to use all the phones in your home and not have to worry about the cell phone's battery life. You may be able to use Dock-N-Talk from Phonelabs to connect to your land line phones to the cell phone.
Now all we need is a UMA application for Windows Mobile, then I would definitely consider switching from Sunrocket.
