T-Mobile launched it's hybrid cell phone / voice over IP service in Seattle yesterday called HotSpot@Home. T-Mobile is selling the Nokia 6136 and Samsung T709 for $50 each with a 2 year contract. The @Home service then costs an additional $20 per month for unlimited calling from a home access point as well as any T-Mobile hotspot. T-Mobile is also giving away a Wi-Fi access point for customers who do not have one already. From phonescoop.
$20 a month is more than I pay for SunRocket VOIP, however the flexibility of just having one number may out weight the additional cost. I wonder if the MDA will be supported at some point...
Customers who work in the city but commute home to distant exurbs, where coverage is sometimes poor, might have the most to gain from the Hotspot @ Home service.
T-Mobile HotSpot @Home has the advantage of supporting a single phone number for both cellular and Wi-Fi phone calls. Calls made from home will be routed over the Internet instead of the wireless network, where operational costs are much higher.
However, the timing of this service is not good. Most people with poor cell service at home already are turning to Voip for unlimited calling to US/Canada with great international rates at a cost below $20.
