My Windows Mobile application list as of May 28th

Yesterday, I reported that I made the move on my AT&T Tilt to the official release of Windows Mobile 6.1 by HTC Europe for the TyTn II.  I initially tried  Dutty's 6.1 test ROM from xda-developers which had many issues, today I noticed he had appended his post title with "[AMBANDONNED DUE TO BUGS]".  The HTC ROM I downloaded from via this post on MoDaCo, seems to be running very well. It does not have the bells and whistle that Dutty's ROM had but I was able to make the tweaks I needed with Kaisertweak. I also ran the Tilt Keyboard fix to make the Tilt's keyboard work correctly.

I also updated quite a few applications.

My one disappointment so far was the fact my backup with Sunnysoft's Backup Manager did not restore correctly and I had install all my applications manually, but it does give me a clean environment. 

Update 5/30/2008: On 5/29/2008 I had problems accessing the Internet with PIE,  rebuilt my Tilt and removed the United Airline PocketFly application for fear of incompatibility with Pocket Internet Explorer in 6.1. I will have to test further.

The good thing about the HTC ROM is that it is not bloated. The only two extra applications I have noticed other than the standard HTC applications are:

  • Adobe Reader LE 2.0
  • World Card Mobile (a business card scanner, I need to try it out)

My Windows Mobile application list as of March 12th

Since my last update I decided to use the GeeksToolbox.com SiriusWM5  application to listen to the Sirius (see my post). I also upgraded Spb Mobile Shell to version 2.0 (see my post).

I have not yet made the move to WM 6.1 although Dutty has a ROM on xda-developers, but it is on my to do list. Still love the Kaiser (AT&T Tilt), although I am using the Verizon SMT5800 with Windows Mobile standard as a secondary device. I will probably come up with a list of software I use on that phone...

My Windows Mobile application list as of January 30th

As I reported on Monday, I flashed the radio ROM on my Tilt with 1.27.15.32 off of the newly released HTC ROM. This radio ROM seems to provide noticeably better GSM signal strength. The downside is slow GPS acquisition time, but that is OK given the improvement with the GSM reception. One other note about the GPS, if you cannot acquire your position, such as inside a building rebooting seems to be the only solution to get it going again when you step outside.

Dutty released V4 of his custom ROM and I may update this weekend. Since I don't have any major issues with V3, I am not chomping at the bit to upgrade. Dutty is working on a WM 6.1 upgrade, I may just wait for that.

Since I now have Sirius in my BMW, I have gotten use to listening to their programming from BBC One to Classic Vinyl and with the included streaming service I can listen using my PC, however now I am turning my attention to listening to Sirius on my Tilt. I found three solutions which I am testing:

I just updated Zagat To Go to version 6. The OTA download at m.zagat.com is temporarily unavailable, but I downloaded it from the Handmark website. This update should provide a better solution for dialing the establishments directly from Zagat To Go.

It is clear that the Bluetooth headset volume is an issue with the Tilt and you need to use a headset which has some amplification capability such as my Blueant V12. I am satisfied with the volume, although I have it set to 10. I have not tried it in a very noisy environment.

My Windows Mobile application list as of January 3rd

My new AT&T Tilt has brought a new environment with a host of updated applications found in Dutty's DualTouch ROM. I am pretty much using the same set of applications I have been using. The one very nice feature of the ROM is that applications like Battery Status and Total Commander are included in the ROM (I added an In ROM section). With over 110MB of available Program memory I have installed all of my application in Program Memory. I am currently at 88MB, which is excellent.  This leaves my 2GB free for media and documents. I tried to use the HTC Home screen but found that the spb Mobile Shell was still superior along with PocketBreeze. So my Today screen remains the same.

There is very nice utility called AdvancedConfig version 1.1 which allows you to tweak all of the performance variable and suggests appropriate settings.

Eventhough Dutty's post on xda-developers says that the .NET Compact Framework 3.5 is installed in ROM, I had to install the .NET CF 2.0 for Zagat To Go and the AdvancedConfig utility reports .Net CF version 2.0.6129.0 so I am not sure what is going on..

My Windows Mobile application list as of August 3rd

A couple weeks ago I encountered a problem where my Wing was continuously rebooting (see solution here), as I was trying to resolve the problem I corrupted my USB ActiveSync connection (Bluetooth worked). I never found a solution and although it did not create a major issue for  me, the only sync I was not able to perform was with Windows Media Player  (it requires a USB connection). This weekend I want to try out MusicBridge and I need the USB connection for the WMP sync to work. Yesterday I performed a Clear Storage and rebuilt the environment on my Wing, entered my tweaks (the page pool fix does not have to be repeated since it modified the base ROM image).

During the process I updated PocketBreeze to version 5.3. It seems a little faster, I have not played with it enough to notice any major changes. I also purchased WebIS' VoiceMinder which automatically emails voice notes. This application solves the problem of having to perform a Desktop ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center synchronization to access voice notes on your desktop/laptop. It is very handy. Ilium eWallet was updated to version 5.0.2 and BatteryStatus was updated to build 221. These were minor updates.

My Windows Mobile application list as of June 29th

Since my last application post, a lot of good things have happened with the Wing. The biggest; was the page pool modification (link) which released precious program memory. Spb Software House also released a Windows Mobile 6 compatible Spb Mobile Shell and I found BatteryStatus a nifty Today plug in with overclocking management.

Based on comments, I am also changing the name of the section "In the Wings" to "Need to try" to avoid confusion. There was no word pun intended, since it has nothing to do with the Wing. This is just a list of applications I want to try. If I like them, they make the list.

My Windows Mobile application list as of June 8th

I have had a chance to put the Wing through its paces this week; I am very impressed how well Windows Mobile 6 handles memory in a less than ideal memory model. The current limitation of 32 concurrent processes each with a maximum size of 32MB can limit how many applications you have running. This situation will be fixed in Windows Mobile 7 which will use Windows CE 6.0 with a revamped memory model. Also dll code that does not shutdown appropriately when the operating system asks it to can cause an application not to load.  This happened to me this week when I tried to load the camera, I would get an out of memory error and it would not load. By eliminating running applications one by one, I narrowed it downed to Spb Shell which I use on my Today screen. Once I removed it, the camera would load, although I had to sometimes manually stop all active processes (usually ActiveSync), but it would load. I posted a entry on the Spb forum and I am waiting for an answer.

I also found that SWC Ltd - MultiIE version v4.0-d72 is not stable on Windows Mobile 6, it hangs the device forcing a reboot.

Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework 2.0 comes pre installed on the unit which saves some program memory. I did find out that this is SP2.

My Windows Mobile application list as of May 30th

Here is the list of applications I am currently running on my T-Mobile Wing with Windows Mobile 6 Professional. I had to opportunity migrate my installed environment from one Wing to another (no issues just an opportunity to test). I used the latest version of Sunnysoft's Backup Manager (4002.05221) to backup the first Wing and restore it to the second Wing. It worked very well (it took less than 10 minutes total), the only thing I have noticed so far were some duplicate entries in my start menu. I fixed that by using file explorer and deleting the duplicates in \windows\start menu\programs. I am currently using the restored Wing and will report back if any other issues develop.

update 5/31/07: Well I spoke to soon on the restore, I am having trouble with my GPRS connection. It is not stable. When I reset the device with "Clear Storage" everything works fine. I tried the restore several times with different options but the symptom is the same. I don't have time to deal with it now, but will follow up with Sunnysoft.

Microsoft's .NET Compact Framework 2.0 comes pre installed on the unit which saves some program memory (although I wonder if it is SP2). I did have to replace the version of Windows Live Search that came with the unit with the latest available from Microsoft (see post).

The Sling Player for Windows Mobile 6 should be available late June early July, I am using the beta, however because of the beta confidentiality agreement I cannot report on it.

I am playing around using my Transystem iBlue 737 GPS (see my review here) with topographic maps on my bicycle . I am testing the Back Country Navigator  application version 2.3.3 which uses Terra Server maps. The maps are downloaded on line via a web service. Using topographic maps is very different than street maps, it will be interesting to see how useful this is for me.

My Windows Mobile application list as of May 2nd

This last weekend I performed a hard reset on my T-Mobile MDA. I was having problems with Bluetooth connections. This gave me an opportunity to upgrade some of the applications I have been using. I used my rebuild strategy discussed here. I may drop OmegaOne Battery Pack since now with Spb Shell, I really don't use its full functionality, although I love the battery meter under the clock.

My Windows Mobile application list as of April 18th

It has been almost three months since I last updated this list. I have created a category of My WM list for direct access to the evolution of the applications I use on my Windows Mobile device.

No  additions to report, however I am testing a pre release phone application which I may start using.
