T-Mobile MDA - Failed ROM upgrades

When a new ROM becomes available there are always a percentage of upgrades that fail and leave the user in a lurch. I have only had this happen once to me on a HP hw6315. After researching the issue the only way to get around the problem was to put the unit in bootloader mode, then retrying the upgrade. All HTC devices have this mode and the Wizard is no exception.

To place the unit in bootloader mode, perform a soft reset, when the screen goes blank hold the camera button until a multi colored screen comes up like the one below.

bootloader 1 370

The bootloader screen. When the unit is connected, USB is displayed at the bottom left.

Once in bootloader mode you can connect the unit via USB to your PC, run CID-Unlock (if not included in the ROM upgrade package) and run the upgrade again. You do not need to have your unit SIM unlocked. If you want to have your phone SIM unlocked and you have been a T-Mobile customer for a while (I have read 90 days) customer service will fill out a request for the unlock code for free. In 2 or 3 days you will receive an email with instructions on how to SIM unlock your MDA. I have done this with all my phones and never had a problem.

Here is an  xda-developer thread on recovering after a bad flash.

An excellent site for officially released ROMs and additional information is the HTC America site here and for unofficial ROMs, the xda-developers ftp site at ftp.xda-developers.com under \Wizard\Roms.

As always perform upgrades at your risk.

Hey Stephen,

Just wanted to say I really appreciate the info...this is AWESOME. Keep up the great work with the site(s)...

I've tried this but at the tri-color screen (even with the "USB" at the bottom) it won't connect to ActiveSync nor will the ROM update programs (or CID program)see the phone. I'm stuck with a phone that won't start up past the tri-color boot screen!

Stephen Skarlatos

ActiveSync won't see the device in bootloader mode. You should connect the device and run the CID unlock and/or the ROM upgrade. If CID unlock and the ROM upgrade does not see the device, try pulling the battery out for 10 minutes and repeat the process.
